Julie's Mindful Leader Blog
In the education space we throw the word “coach” around a lot.
Instructional coach. Literacy coach. School improvement coach.
We usually mean someone whose role is non-evaluative, has deep expertise in the subject area, and provides recommendations on how to improve.
But if you’re thinking about working with a leadership coach to build your team’s capacity, you want to be able to tell the difference between a REAL certified coach and a non-certified person who is just called a coach.
So how can you spot a real coach?
1. We commit to a code of ethics that ensures confidentiality. That means we're not beholden to your supervisor or district to share anything we hear unlike traditional educational coaches.
2. We have received rigorous training from a certified instructor and commit to ongoing professional development. Traditional coaches in the education space were good at teaching, but don't typically have formal training in how to COACH for change.
3. We don’t claim to be experts in YOUR context. We ask deep questions to guide you to your own solutions. Educational coaches are typically experts in a particular field like reading, math or science. Or a particular context like school turn-around or low-income schools. Then these coaches try to apply what they know from their perspective to your unique context. *womp womp*
4. Last but not least, we hold a certification from the International Coaching Federation. ICF is the international gold standard for coaches!
Now that you know what makes a real coach, let me know if you're looking to make change in your leadership!
